چکیده

Polarized far-infrared and submillimeter emission is calculated for models of nonspherical dust grains that are constrained to reproduce the observed wavelength-dependent extinction and polarization of starlight. For emission from regions where the magnetic field is perpendicular to the line-of-sight, the far-infrared emission is expected to have substantial linear polarization at wavelengths λ & 100 μm, but the degree of linear polarization, and its variation with wavelength, is model-dependent. Models in which the starlight polarization is produced by both amorphous silicate and graphite grains have linear polarizations between 6% and 10% at λ > 100 μm, but for some models in which only silicate grains are spheroidal, the linear polarization increases from about 3% at 100 μm to about 15% at 1 mm. We briefly discuss the implications of these results for removal of the polarized dust emission from maps of the Cosmic Microwave Background, as well as the possibility of discriminating among interstellar dust models based on observations of far-infrared and submillimeter linear polarization. Polarized Emission from Interstellar Dust

Observations of far-infrared (FIR) and submillimeter (SMM) polarized emission are used to study magnetic fields and dust grains in dense regions of the interstellar medium (ISM). These observations place constraints on models of molecular clouds, star-formation, grain alignment mechanisms, and grain size, shape, and composition. The FIR/SMM polarization is strongly dependent on wavelength. We h...

Infrared Emission from Interstellar Dust. Iv. the Silicate-graphite-pah Model in the Post-spitzer Era

IR emission spectra are calculated for dust heated by starlight, formixtures of amorphous silicate and graphitic grains, including varying amounts of PAH particles. The models are constrained to reproduce the average Milky Way extinction curve. The calculations include the effects of single-photon heating. Updated IR absorption properties for the PAHs are presented that are consistent with obse...

Infrared Emission from Interstellar Dust. Ii. the Diffuse Interstellar Medium

We present a quantitative model for the infrared emission from dust in the di†use interstellar medium. The model consists of a mixture of amorphous silicate grains and carbonaceous grains, each with a wide size distribution ranging from molecules containing tens of atoms to large grains km in diameter. Z1 We assume that the carbonaceous grains have properties like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbo...

Ja n 19 99 Interstellar Dust in the WIRE to Planck Era

Interstellar dust appears in a number of roles in the inter-stellar medium. Historically, the most familiar one is as a source of extinction in the optical. Absorbed optical and ultraviolet light heats the dust, whence infrared (including near-infrared to submillimeter) emission, the particular theme of this review. In some distant galaxies, most of the luminosity of the galaxy is thus converte...

The Dust Properties of Eight Debris Disk Candidates as Determined by Submillimeter Photometry

The nature of far-infrared dust emission toward main sequence stars, whether interstellar or circumstellar, can be deduced from submillimeter photometry. We present JCMT/SCUBA flux measurements at 850μm toward 8 stars with large photospheric excesses at 60–100μm. 5 sources were detected at 3σ or greater significance and one was marginally detected at 2.5σ. The inferred dust masses and temperatu...
